Step-by-step instructions

PyCharm is an excellent editor for Python that has a community edition that you can use for free, or a professional edition that you can purchase. In this post we will install PyCharm on Mac OS X.

Prerequisites

PyCharm requires a JVM to run.

Download Pycharm

  1. Download PyCharm from PyCharm Download page.
  2. Click Download Community.
  3. Select Save File, then click OK.
  4. Wait for the download to complete, then double click the .dmg file.
  5. Drag the PyCharm icon to the Applications folder.
  6. Open PyCharm as you would any other application.

If you get the ‘legacy Java SE 6’ error.

You may be prompted with the following error when you first open PyCharm:

To open "PyCharm" you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime.

Follow these steps to fix this error.

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Click Applications in the left pane.
  3. In the right pane, right-click on PyCharm CE, click Show Package Contents.
  4. Navigate into the Contents folder.
  5. Open the Info.plist file in a text editor.
  6. Find the JVMVersion and change the value as shown below. Then save the file and reopen PyCharm.

Original value:

<key>JVMVersion</key>
<string>1.6*</string>

Update to:

<key>JVMVersion</key>
<string>1.6+</string>
