Install PyCharm on Ubuntu Linux

Step-by-step instructions

PyCharm is an excellent editor for Python that has a community edition that you can use for free, or a professional edition that you can purchase. In this post we will install PyCharm on Ubuntu Linux.

Prerequisites

PyCharm requires a JVM to run.

• Install the Oracle JDK 7 u75 on Ubuntu Linux.

Download Pycharm

mkdir -p ~/opt/packages/pycharm

cd ~/opt/packages/pycharm

wget http://download.jetbrains.com/python/pycharm-community-4.0.4.tar.gz

gzip -dc pycharm-community-4.0.4.tar.gz | tar xf -

ln -s ~/opt/packages/pycharm/pycharm-community-4.0.4 ~/opt/pycharm

# Start PyCharm
~/opt/pycharm/bin/pycharm.sh

Configure PyCharm

• In the Complete Installation dialog box, click OK.
• In the PyCharm Community Edition Initial Configuration dialog box, click OK.
• Close PyCharm and reopen using the standard Ubuntu menu.
